NArFU Will Host II International Phd “Russia in the Arctic Dialogue: Local and Global Context”
International PhD School «Russia in the Arctic Dialogue: Local and Global Context» took place at NArFU from 5 to 11 April 2019. The event was held within the framework of the International Forum «Arctic — Territory of Dialogue» and gathered students and top-level experts from 13 countries: Norway, Sweden, Finland, China, India, Turkey, France, USA, Canada, Germany, Czech Republic, Republic of Korea and Russia.
Participants discussed a vast scope of current issues of the Arctic: northern governance and economies, environmental challenges, Arctic law, life of the local communities, human adaptation and international cooperation in the Arctic. The PhD students shared their research projects with colleagues and experts within presentation sessions and a panel discussion.
The intensive and diverse programme of the course provided the participants with the possibility to attend lectures given by Russian and foreign experts and scientists, get acquainted with NArFU scientific infrastructure as well as to visit key regional enterprises and organizations such as a Diamond mining company «Severalmaz», a scientific vessel «Professor Molchanov» and a National Park «Russian Arctic» office.
At present Northern Arctic Federal University is preparing to host the II International Phd «Russia in the Arctic Dialogue: Local and Global Context» as a side event of the X International Congress of Arctic Social Sciences (ICASS Х) in June 2019. The aim of the event is to facilitate international collaboration between young scholars, experts and academia from Arctic and non-Arctic countries in studying and discussing contemporary issues of the Arctic Region in global context.
