Testing the «Floating university»
Participants tested the unike arctic Russian-founded science expedition «Floating university».
As the representatives of Northern Arctic Federal University (Narfu) said to RIA Novosti at a press conference in St. Petersburg, the pioner project from Narfu and the Northern branch of Hydromet, the vessel «Professor Molchanov» is ready to open for young participants and will begin in early July.
At the press conference the participants welcomed the scientist, the head of the department of international law and comparative law science, participant of the expedition «Russian Alaska» Ivan Savelyev; science worker at Narfu, candidate of geographical sciences Dmitriy Polikin and lecturer at Narfu, participant of the expedition to the island Wrangel Vasiliy Matonin.
The innovative project «Floating university» diverges from other polar science expeditions because it is the first time in history that professors gives a lecture to students at Narfu on board the vessel. And here, from the profoundness of the sea, they can employ their knowledge. On the vessel it is planned to carry out several oceanological, meteorological, hydrological and ecological measurements.
As Dmitriy Polikin pointed out to RIA Novosti at the press conference, «Professor Molchanov» is a modern and well equipped vessel, with all the necessarities to carry out serious research at sea. Such as collection of tests from the water, collection of meteorological data and final analyzation of the results.
No doubt that this form of education has a purpose of raising the interest of a new generation of leading specialists, which are able to work in polar areas. As the Vasiliy Matonin, the associate professor at the department of culture and religion studies at Narfu underlined, the experience of practical work in a small team, gathered in profession under extreme conditions and emotional stress, strengthens the garanty for sucess for beginning students. The most important is to avoid storms!
