"Arctic Floating University" helped the research vessel "Aldan" and reached the Russian Harbor
The joint expedition of NArFU and Roshydromet continues its journey in high latitudes. The latest news from the voyage is described by the participant of the expedition, journalist Irina Skalina.
Participants of the «Arctic Floating University» listened to lectures on soil and natural gases, which was read by Sergei Goryachkin, head of the geography and evolution of soils department at the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences. On Novaya Zemlya and the islands of Franz Josef Land, researchers measure the amount of carbon dioxide and methane that is released from the earth.
On the way to the Bay of Russian Harbor, the crew of «Professor Molchanov» helped colleagues from the research ship «Aldan», where fresh water ended on board.
«At midnight, in the rays of the sun, we saw a ship in distress ... This I’m exaggerating again! At night, we approached the research vessel Aldan, whose crew asked for help. They broke the desalination plant and the water ran out. There are 22 people aboard the Aldan, of which 5 are women. What is it like to be on a ship where the water runs out, unfortunately, I represent. It was decided to pump 15 tons of water from our 150 to Aldan. We very long and effectively docked, one cable broke, the waves were in the side, and the spray fell sometimes even to the sixth deck, »- describes the events of Irina Skalina.
